APRIL Pools Month: New Gus and Goldie Unveiling

April 8, 2022

El Paso Parks and Recreation Aquatics had their unveiling of the New Gus and Goldie Safety Fish today at Memorial Park Pool the site of where the original Safety Fish Song was first filmed for marketing their swim lessons and water safety. In 1979 Bill Cowan, Gayle Vokes and Aquatics Personnel helped develop the Gus and Goldie concept to increase pool attendance, water safety and their learn to swim programs. It was marketed to over 16 cities in the United States. After the unveiling parents and children took pictures with Gus and Goldie. An evening of free swim was available to all in attendance.

Do you remember the song:

“Well the water is fine so come on in…”

“We’d like to but we cannot swim…”

“Whaddaya mean ya can’t swim, hey stop that messing get down to the pool and start your lesson…”

“Hey, hey everybody would you look at us, we’re swimming like fish like Goldie and Gus, no need to worry, no need to fuss were swimming like Goldie and Gus, YEAH!”

Well, they’re back and ready for the plunge into the pool. But they want you to remember to Swim Safely.

  1. Constant Supervision of children in and around all water including pools, fountains, ponds, buckets, bath tubs, toilets, ice chests, hot tubs and when visiting motel/hotel pools.

  3. Learn CPR.
